Sump Pump Installation and Mississauga's $6,000 Rebate

Get a fixed price →

No obligation, no salesperson — a real price from a vetted craftsman, backed by a 365-day warranty (30 days for plumbing and electrical).

Mississauga pays up to $6,000 toward a sump pump, but the City must pre-approve the job before the contractor starts. Send the quote first, install second, and keep the paid invoice.

Most Mississauga basement floods have the same bad ending: the homeowner pays for a pump, then learns the City wanted to see the quote first. This guide puts the City of Mississauga's basement flooding prevention rebate steps in the order that protects your money. Check the City's rebate page before you sign, because programs and funding change.

What the rebate pays

The City lists up to $6,000 for a sump pump. Other measures have their own limits: up to $1,000 for capping the foundation drain, up to $125 per downspout disconnection (to $500), and up to $1,500 for a storm lateral backwater valve. The most you can apply for is $7,500, and unused money from one measure cannot be moved to another.

Who qualifies

Step 1: get pre-approval before any work

Since February 12, 2025, every measure must be pre-approved. The City asks for four things: a City tax bill showing your name, an itemized quote listing the measures, their costs, and the contractor's name and licence number, a sketch from the contractor showing where the work goes, and a building permit where one is required. The City says that permit is needed for foundation drain capping and backwater valves, so a sump pump on its own is not on that list. The City emails you to confirm approval or ask for more information. Wait for that email.

Step 2: hire a licensed trade, not a helper with a pump

The work must be done by a contractor licensed in their skilled trade in Ontario. Owner-performed labour is not reimbursed. Plumbers are a compulsory trade, so you can look the certification up before you sign; our guide on checking a contractor's licence in Ontario shows where. The City does not recommend contractors, and it does not phone residents offering work.

Check where the water goes

The City's discharge rules matter for the install. Water must not run onto a neighbour's property, public property such as a school or park, or a municipal right-of-way, and it must not go straight into a watercourse. The City suggests downspouts drain 4 to 6 feet from the foundation to a lawn, garden or rain barrel. If your foundation drain connects to the sanitary sewer, you must consult the Region of Peel before you apply.

Step 3: apply for final approval within six months

After the install, you have six months from pre-approval to apply for the rebate. You submit the contractor's original invoice. It must come from the same contractor, list what was installed, give a cost breakdown and confirm the full amount was paid. Add the building permit inspection sign-off if one applied. Applications are processed in the order received until funding runs out or the program period ends, and cheques can take 8 to 10 weeks.

What the rebate does not cover

The City lists owner-performed labour, interior finish repairs, exterior restoration, weeping tile repair, secondary sump pumps and standby generators as not reimbursed. If the flood already damaged drywall or flooring, that repair is a separate job at your own cost.

Quick answers

Does Mississauga pay for a sump pump?

Yes, the City's basement flooding prevention rebate pays up to $6,000 for a sump pump. The most you can receive across all measures is $7,500.

Do I need approval before the sump pump goes in?

Yes. Since February 12, 2025, the City must pre-approve the work before installation. A job started first is not covered.

Can I install the sump pump myself and claim the rebate?

No. The City does not reimburse owner-performed labour, and the work must be done by a contractor licensed in their trade in Ontario.

How long do I have to finish after pre-approval?

You apply for final approval within six months of pre-approval. You send the contractor's original invoice showing the full amount was paid.

Can I get the rebate twice?

Not within 10 years. A property that received a sump pump rebate in the past 10 years is not eligible until that time has passed.

The order that keeps the rebate safe

Quote, pre-approval email, install, paid invoice, application. If a contractor wants to start the pump before the City has replied, ask them to wait a few days.
