Most sump pumps fail in one of two boring ways: the float sticks, or the discharge freezes or clogs and the pump churns the same water in circles until it burns out. Neither failure has much to do with the pump's brand and everything to do with how the system around it was put together: the pit's depth and gravel base, the check valve, the discharge route, and whether anything tested the float in the last two years.
Rhodex treats the pump as one part of a system. Master plumbers do all sump work, and the office manager prices the whole picture (pit condition, discharge, backup options) before anyone is dispatched.
What the job actually involves
A replacement swap is the simple case: pull the old pump, check the pit for silt and debris, verify the check valve and discharge line, set and level the new pump, adjust the float so it switches cleanly with real clearance, and run it through a full cycle with a hose before we leave.
A new installation is bigger: cutting the pit through the slab, bedding it in gravel so groundwater can actually reach it, running the discharge line to a lawful outlet, and wiring the pump to its own circuit. If the basement is finished or the hydro history is rough, we'll also talk battery backup, meaning a second pump or a battery-driven one that keeps working when the storm takes the power out.
What changes the price
As general market estimates, a US cost guide for sump pump installation puts a typical basement installation at $800 to $2,000, averaging around $1,400, with these brackets around it:
- The pump itself. Pedestal units run roughly $80 to $800, submersible units $90 to $1,000, and horsepower and build quality drive the spread.
- A new pit. Cutting through slab and bedding a pit properly runs roughly $500 to $1,200 on top of the install.
- A replacement swap. Roughly $350 to $1,000 including labour, when the pit and discharge are already sound.
- Battery backup. Roughly $150 to $2,000 depending on capacity and whether it's a backup pump or a battery on the main one.
- Inspection and maintenance visits. Roughly $50 to $350 to check and clean a system you already have.
Rhodex's own prices are never published online. Each install is quoted from your actual pit and discharge route, itemised with labour, materials and HST.
Quick answers
How much does sump pump installation cost?
As general market estimates, a full basement sump installation runs roughly $800 to $2,000 including the pump, a replacement swap $350 to $1,000, cutting a new pit $500 to $1,200, and a battery backup $150 to $2,000 depending on capacity.
How long does a sump pump last?
Commonly in the seven-to-ten-year range, but the honest answer is that it depends on how often it cycles. A pump that runs every spring melt and every storm wears faster than one that sits idle, and a stuck float can kill a pump that was mechanically fine. Cheap or skipped maintenence is the most common reason a good pump dies young.
Pedestal or submersible — which pump?
Submersible pumps sit inside the pit, quieter and out of the way; pedestal pumps keep the motor above the pit, easier to service and often cheaper. Both are legitimate choices. The pit's depth, the noise tolerance of the room above, and the service story decide it.
Do I need a battery backup?
If the basement is finished or the power grid around you is unreliable, yes, seriously consider it. Storms take power out exactly when groundwater is highest, and an un-pumped pit with a finished basement is the expensive combination.
Where is the water discharged to?
Discharge must carry water away from the foundation to a place where it can't cycle back into the pit, across the yard toward a storm drain or graded outlet, never against your own or a neighbour's foundation wall.
How Rhodex handles sump pump work
Describe what the pit does today: cycles often, never runs, hums but doesn't lift water. An office manager prices the job, and a master plumber does the work. You approve the quote before anyone is dispatched, and plumbing work is covered by a 30-day warranty on workmanship, part of Rhodex's 365-day warranty.
Where we install sump pumps
Sump crews work Etobicoke and Mississauga in the west; Vaughan's Woodbridge, Maple, Concord and Thornhill; and north through King City, Aurora, Newmarket, Richmond Hill, Markham and Stouffville.
