Every house in York Region eventually needs drywall work: the door handle that went through the wall, the anchor holes from a relocated TV, the seam that opened up over three winters of heating cycles, the water stain from a leak that's long since been fixed but left its map on the ceiling. The materials cost almost nothing. The craft is everything else.
Rhodex treats drywall repair as a finishing job rather than a filling job. The measure of the work is whether you can find the patch two months later, and that's decided by taping, feathering, texture matching and priming rather than by how well the hole got stuffed.
What the job actually involves
Small holes get squared out, backed, filled and feathered wide enough that the compound dissapears into the plane of the wall. Larger damage gets a section cut back to structure, a new piece fitted, taped, and built up in coats, each one drying before the next, because rushing the schedule is how cracks telegraph through six months later. Water-damaged drywall gets cut back to sound material, never painted over.
Then comes the part that separates repairs you can see from repairs you can't: sanding to a flat plane, matching the wall's texture if it has one, priming the repair so the paint absorbs evenly, and painting, often a full wall or ceiling, because a feathered patch on faded paint reads as a shadow even when it's perfectly flat.
What changes the price
As general market estimates (not Rhodex prices), a Canadian renovation cost guide puts full-sheet drywall replacement at $60 to $150 per sheet installed and finished, with taping and mudding at $0.65 to $1.30 per square foot. What moves a repair quote:
- Size and count. A patch is a visit; six patches in one room ride the same visit and cost proportionally less each.
- Texture. Flat walls are the easy case; orange-peel and knockdown textures need matching skill.
- Paint. If the patch must be invisible, the honest scope usually includes repainting the whole wall or ceiling.
- Access. Stairwells and vaulted ceilings change the staging; furniture moving changes the day.
- Cause. A crack that keeps coming back points at structure rather than drywall, and the diagnosis is part of the quote.
Rhodex's own prices are never published online. Each repair is quoted from photos or an on-site look, itemised with labour, materials and HST.
Quick answers
How much does drywall repair cost?
As general market estimates, replacing and finishing a full drywall sheet runs roughly $60 to $150 installed, and professional taping and mudding runs about $0.65 to $1.30 per square foot. Small hole patches are usually quoted per visit rather than per square foot.
Why can a small hole cost as much as a big one?
Because the cost isn't the drywall; it's the visits. A proper patch needs taping coats, drying time between them, sanding, priming and paint, and the wall doesn't care how big the hole was when it insists on the schedule. Two small patches in different rooms often cost more than one large patch in the same wall.
Can I see the patch after it's painted?
A well-executed patch disappears under paint in most rooms. What gives repairs away is texture and sheen: if the wall has an orange-peel or knockdown texture, matching it takes skill, and fresh paint on a sun-faded wall reads as a brighter rectangle until the whole wall gets a coat. We tell you before the work whether the patch will be invisible or whether a wall repaint is the honest price of invisible.
Is the crack in my drywall a structural problem?
Usually not. Most cracks are seasonal movement at seams and corners. But stair-stepping cracks above doors and windows, cracks that reappear after repair, or ones that keep widening deserve a look at the framing and foundation before they get covered up. We'd rather tell you that than tape over a symptom.
Do you deal with water-damaged drywall?
Yes, once the leak is fixed. There's no point finishing drywall that's still getting wet. If you have an active leak, that plumbing or roof problem is step one; the drywall scope is quoted for after the source is dry and confirmed.
