Every sticking door, sagging gate and rattling lock in York Region traces back to the same handful of causes: a frame out of plumb, hinges that have crept loose, a slab that swells each humid July, or a latch that was never aligned to its strike in the first place. None of these require a new door. Most require half a visit.
When a door does get replaced (damage, a style change, a patio door that's reached the end of its sealing life), the quality lives in the fitting: shimming the frame plumb and level, correcting reveal gaps so they're even all the way down, and weatherstripping that actually meets on exterior work.
What the job actually involves
Repairs start with diagnosis: does the door bind at the top, the latch side, or the floor? Each points to a different adjustment, whether hinge shims, strike-plate relocation or a light plane of the edge. Hardware gets tightened into sound material; strike screws that have chewed their holes get proper longer screws into the framing, which is also the fix that makes a deadbolt worth having.
Installation is the bigger job. A pre-hung door (panel already hung in its frame) is squared into the rough opening with shims, insulated on exterior work, cased and trimmed. A slab install into an existing sound frame means mortising for the hinges and the latch, boring the lockset, and fitting the door to the frame's actual dimensions rather than a label's promice. Exteriors add the threshold and the sealing detail, which is where drafts and water get in when it's done fast.
What changes the price
As general market estimates (not Rhodex prices), a Canadian cost guide puts professional interior-door labour at roughly $240 to $780 plus the cost of the door itself, with pre-hung installs at the lower end. What moves an individual quote:
- Pre-hung versus slab. A slab into an existing frame takes more fitting skill than a pre-hung into a cleared opening.
- Interior versus exterior. Exterior doors add threshold work, weatherstripping and security hardware, and the cost of getting any of it wrong.
- Hardware. New bores for handlesets or smart locks add cutting and alignment work to the visit.
- Frame condition. A rotted or out-of-square frame turns a door swap into a frame job; that's decided on site rather than in a catalogue.
- Repair versus replace. Most adjustment visits land well below any installation price, which is exactly why we quote the smaller scope when it's the right one.
Rhodex's own prices are never published online. Each job is quoted itemised with labour, materials and HST before anyone is dispatched.
Quick answers
How much does door installation cost?
As general market estimates, professional labour for a standard interior door runs roughly $240 to $780 plus the door itself; pre-hung installs land near the low end and hollow-frame retrofits near the top. Exterior doors run higher because of weatherstripping, thresholds and security hardware.
Can a sticking door be fixed without replacing it?
Almost always. Sticking is a geometry problem (a house settling, humidity swelling the slab, or hinges that have worked loose), and the fix is planing a little where the door actually rubs, tightening or re-screwing hinges, or adjusting the strike plate. Replacement is the answer for damage rather than for friction.
Pre-hung or slab — which should I buy?
A pre-hung door comes already mounted in its own frame and is the straightforward choice when the old frame is coming out. A slab is just the door panel, cheaper, and the right choice when the existing frame is square and sound, but it puts the mortising and fitting work entirely on the installer's skill.
My door won't latch since the weather changed. Is the frame warped?
Sometimes, but more often the door itself has swollen with seasonal humidity or the hinges have shifted a few millimetres. Both are adjustments rather than rebuilds. A warped frame shows up as an uneven, persistent gap that no adjustment closes, and that's the case that needs the frame looked at properly.
Do you install locks and smart hardware too?
Yes: deadbolts, handlesets and smart locks, fitted to the door and aligned with the strike so the bolt actually seats rather than grinding. If the door needs a bore drilled for new hardware, that's part of the same visit.
